D-Day
:
D-Day.. observed annually on June 6, brings overwhelming
memories of the brave men and women who fought a strategically planned and
well-executed battle that ultimately led to the end of the Second World War.
Planning for our invasion of German-occupied France began
in 1942. In an attempt to mislead the Germans and maintain the secrecy of the
details of the D-Day invasion, the Allies conducted a military deception,
code-named Operation Bodyguard. It included fake radio transmissions, double
agents, and a ‘phantom army’ commanded by American General George Patton.
June 5 was originally chosen as D-Day due to predictions
of weather and high tide, based on the phase of the moon. Bad weather
conditions ultimately interfered with the established plans and D-Day moved to
June 6.

Eyewear :
Glasses have gone from a one-time “geek necessity” to a
cool “fashion accessory.” National Eyewear Day invites us to celebrate the fact
that glasses, besides correcting our vision, can help create a whole new
appearance.
Honestly.. many of us wear non-prescription glasses simply because we like the way they make us look Properly prescribed lenses can improve your overall health. Take time on National Eyewear Day to find a local optometrist who can determine if your eyes could use some assistance. Plus tech has changed the “mechanics of eye wear forever”
New “smart” prescription lenses can now automatically switch focus from far to near and back again - thanks to liquid crystal-activated sensors on the frame. National Eye wear Day reminds us to take a moment on June 6 to think
Russian
Language Day :
Russian Language Day coincides with the birthday of
Aleksandr Pushkin on June 6, a Russian poet considered the father of modern
Russian literature.
“ UNESCO established this day in 2010”
Russian is a Slavic language, whose closest relatives are Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Rusyn (Ukraine and Slovenia). In the 19th century, what we now classify as modern Russian was known as “Great Russian.” Belarusian was called “White Russian,” and Ukrainian was “Little Russian.” Today over 170 million people speak Russian..Rooted in the Cyrillic alphabet, the Russian language traces its origins back to the Old East Slavic dialects. Over centuries, it has evolved into a powerful means of communication and expression.. playing a crucial role in the development of Russian literature..music.. and art...
Not everyone agrees on this, but there are those who think the Russian language is among the most beautiful in the world. It has a considerable impact on other languages Russian speakers can affect change in the world
Russian Language Day gives us a chance to find common ground amid the political
turmoil.
On this auspicious day, it is essential to emphasize the significance of preserving and promoting the Russian language. Educational institutions, cultural organizations, and governments play a pivotal role in supporting Russian language programs, encouraging its study and facilitating cultural exchange. Language enthusiasts are also pivotal in celebrating and sharing the beauty of Russian with the world.

Gardening Exercise Day:
On National Gardening Exercise Day, June 6, we appreciate
the bodybuilding activity that is gardening by picking up our trowels and
toiling in our gardens.
Not only is it so satisfying to grow your own flowers or
herbs from seedling to sprout to a full-grown plant, but it’s also great
exercise! Any gardener will tell you that squatting to pick weeds or water a
seedling will get those quads burning.Besides, working in the hot sun adds an
extra athletic challenge.
Gardening flourished all over the world — and almost at the same time! While evidence of ancient rice cultivation was found in China in 7000 B.C., corn was found in Central America, and so on. All over the world, different flowers, produce, and herbs sprung up and were domesticated, then shared. By 1100 B.C., gardens had moved beyond agriculture, cropping up in front of temples and around public buildings.
Between 100 BC and 100 A.D., books on horticulture,
agriculture, and botany started to take off. They depicted everything from
rural life and herbal medicines to waterworks that were placed in gardens.
Letters described beautiful villa gardens teeming with carefully domesticated
and cultivated plants. ‘Scholar gardens’ and palace gardens reflected culture
and government as civilizations flourished. The study of botany emerged in the
1600's, followed by botanical gardens
Since the environmental awakening of the 1960s, much of
gardening has been dominated by principles of sustainability and
environmentalism. Many gardeners dream of patches full of low-maintenance,
native plants, with house plants like succulents sunning themselves indoors.
Though gardens have definitely changed throughout the centuries, it’s clear
people have always loved their plants
World
Pest Day :
World Pest Day is observed every June 6 to raise awareness about effective pest management practices and how they benefit the quality of human and plant life. Did you know that humans have been controlling pest infestation since 3000 B.C.? Pests are organisms that spread diseases, cause destruction, or constitute a nuisance. Familiar pests are ants, rodents, termites, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and bed bugs. Different methods are used to control pests, including pesticides, biological control agents, electronic devices, and physical means. World Pest Day, also known as World Pest Awareness Day, is an initiative by the Ch While pest control might be as old as agriculture, the first instance was not recorded until 3000 B.C. in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians applied biological control agents by introducing cats to manage rodent populations in their grain stores.
They also introduced mongooses into homes to control
rodents and snakes. In 2500 B.C., the Sumerians of Mesopotamia began using
sulfur compounds as insecticides. In 1200 B.C., the Chinese employed predatory
ants against pests such as beetles and caterpillars to protect citrus orchards.
They also used botanical insecticides to treat seeds.
While there was a continued development in pest
management during Medieval times in other parts of the world, Europe regressed
and adopted superstitious tactics. However, that changed with the scientific
awakening during the Renaissance. New chemical repellents were discovered,
including nicotine and arsenic. In the 1700s, German physician Franz Ernst
Brückmann invented a mechanical flytrap to capture various insects. Brückmann
later invented the flea trap, which became a popular fashion accessory during
Victorian times. In 1879, James M. Keep patented the first lethal mousetrap,
which used a set of spring-loaded, cast-iron jaws. New chemical insecticides
were developed between the late 1800s and after WWII, including D.D.T.,
herbicides, organophosphates, and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
During the 1960s, the public became aware of the harmful
impacts of these chemical pesticides on the environment. That led to the
re-emergence of biological control.
Although chemical pest control is still the primary
method for pest management today, people are beginning to take an interest in
traditional and natural pest control. “On June 6, 2017”
The Chinese Pest Control Association pioneered the first World Pest Day, collaborating with the Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers’ Association, the National Pest Management Association, and the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations.

Drive-In Movie Day:
National Drive-In Movie Day marks the day when America’s
first drive-in theater was opened in New Jersey by Richard M. Hollingshead Jr.
The drive-in was created for seniors who found it hard to comfortably sit in
indoor movie theaters. He made a small drive-in theater for his mom in his
driveway and placed a big screen in his backyard with a Kodak projector on his
car
Later, in 1932, he used the same technique to open his first patented drive-in theatre. It had a parking space for 400 cars. The goal was to cater to the entire family in the open air. The first movie that was played in the theatre was the popular British Comedy “Wife Beware.”
Owing to American’s love for movies, more drive-ins were
set up in the country. By the late ’50s.. more than ..3,000 drive-ins could
be found in the U.S. New York had the biggest drive-in theater. It could
accommodate up to 2,500 vehicles.
This drive-in also had a restaurant and a playground for
kids. An indoor seating arrangement was also available. The drive-in industry
capitalized on the fact that they were convenient for families and romantic for
couples. When color television. cable TV.and VCRs became popular during the
early ’90s, the trend of drive-in theatres began to decline.
